Yucca's used cooking oil biodiesel plant plans withdrawn because residents' comments were about water and groundwater pollution.

KINGMAN - A developer has withdrawn his zoning requests for a biodiesel facility near Yucca due to a lack of public support for the project. Mohave County Planning and Zoning Commission Chairman Carl Flusche announced that the items had been withdrawn from the commission's agenda Wednesday morning.
According to information provided to the commission, the biodiesel plant and industrial park would have been built on 80 acres near the Old Trails exit on Interstate 40.

The plant would have produced around 1.3 million gallons of fuel a year and use approximately one gallon of water for each gallon of BioDiesel fuel produced.

The developers, Huang Ta Shen and the Shen Family Trust of Las Vegas, estimated that 30 to 40 people would have been hired to operate the plant. The plant would have used cooking oil to manufacture the fuel.
However, on Friday, Donald Van Brunt, the local representative for the Shen family, sent an email to the commission requesting that the family's application for a rezone of the property from agricultural/residential to manufacturing and heavy manufacturing and a request for minor amendments to the county's general plan and the Yucca area plan be withdrawn from the agenda.
"The owner has determined that public support for his investment is not sufficient at this time to proceed," Van Brunt wrote in the email.
According to information provided to the commission, several residents expressed concerns about the plant during a May 12 public meeting in Yucca.
Most of the residents' comments were about groundwater pollution, truck traffic, proximity to residential housing in the area, fumes and lower property values.
